Wedding Favors for a Traditional Wedding by Carla Eduards
With wedding favors coming in such a wide variety of styles and designs these days it can be difficult knowing which is right for your style of wedding. For a traditional wedding there is a need to adhere to certain etiquette and to give favors which coordinate fully.
Traditional wedding favors were almonds which would have a sweet coating applied. They were said to represent the bitter-sweetness of marriage with the almond being bitter and the coating being sweet. It was traditional to wrap them in luxurious fabric wraps and to give them in threes or fives representing health, wealth, happiness, longevity and fertility.
Today almonds are still available for wedding favors, although many brides will choose sugar coated chocolate versions instead as they tend to appeal to more people tastes. Other traditional wedding favors will combine many of the symbols commonly associated with weddings such as wedding rings, doves, swans and wedding bells. Here are a few ideas for traditional wedding favors.
Candles are a very traditional favors and one which is popular for any style of wedding. Small Votive Candles are the easiest style to give, although tea lights are nice if given with a pretty holder to put them in. Choose white or ivory colored candles to really fit the traditional style.
Wedding bells are a traditional but fun favor. These little mini bells should be rung by your guests each time you and your groom enter the room, at which point you should kiss. They are available in silver or gold and also come in styles which include a holder on top for the name card.
Edibles are really the most traditional type of wedding favors and aside from almonds and chocolates there are other types of edible favors you could give. Mints, cookies, mini cakes and even miniature bottles of spirits are all common types of edible favors. Look for some traditional packaging to put them such as plain white or ivory boxes, tulle nets, voile bags and novelty holders such as swans, Champagne Glasses and lantern boxes.
When it comes to decorating your favors you can use items such as fresh flower heads, plastic or brass ‘wedding rings’, miniature doves and love hearts. Keep your decorations to a minimum to keep with the traditional feel and avoid too much use of color, plain white or ivory is best.
